TraDE-Opt Spring School

Our Spring School, organized exclusively for TraDE-Opt ESRs and dedicated to quality management and structured problem solving as well as PhD defense rehearsal will take place between March 27 and March 31 2023 at the University of Graz!

The school will feature training and certificate for Level 1 TRIZ (teoriya resheniya izobretatelskikh zadatch, "theory of inventive problem solving"), a set of practical tools for understanding and solving problems in a rigorous and systematic way. The PhD defense rehearsal will include videotaping and group feedback.

!!! STAY TUNED FOR MORE UPDATES !!!

BACK TO OPTIMIZATION

As a way to kick-off after the vacation, some of our TraDE-OPT ESRs have participated in “International conference on optimization and decision science-ODS2022" in Florence, ITALY from August 30th to September 2nd. The ESRs have made an active contribution to two of the conference’s invited sessions entitled “Optimization for machine learning 1 and 2".
On the first session, Emanuele Naldi presented his work about “Graph extension of the Douglas-Rachford method with minimal lifting”.
Followed by Enis Chenchen talk entitled “Distributed extension of the Douglas Rachford method with applications”.
Jonathan Chirinos Rodriguez talk about “Learning Resolvent Operators”.
On the second session, Lionel Tondji presented “Faster Randomized Block Sparse Kaczmarz by Averaging”.
Afterwards, Cheik Traoré talked about “Asynchronous parallel block-coordinate forward-backward algorithm”.
Cristian Vega gave a talk “Iterative regularization for convex regularizers with activation onto a priori information”.
Finally, Mouna GHARBi talked about “GPU-based Implementations of MM Algorithms. Application to Spectroscopy Signal Restoration”.
The ESRs also enjoyed the cultural experience by discovering the beautiful Florence.

Workshop on on Algorithmic and Continuous Optimization

Our first workshop, dedicated to Algorithmic and Continuous Optimization, will take place between July 4 and July 8 2022 at UCLouvain!

The workshop will provide an opportunity for TraDE-OPT participants, including all PhD students, to meet in person for the first time.

First Summer School

Optimization Methods for Machine Learning and  Inverse Problems.

Organized within the ITN TraDE-OPT Project
5-9 Jul 2021, virtually hosted at Centrale Supelec.

The summer school will consist of a scientific program, as well as SciComm modules. The scientific program includes inverse problems and machine learning, with a special focus on their connection with optimization. The SciComm courses will focus on writing, presentation and public engagement skills. In addition, there will be a tutorial on bibliography management tools. A lively social program will also afford ample opportunities for networking. More details on the format will be provided upon registration. The school is open to the ESRs within the TraDE-OPT project, but a limited number of other participants can be accommodated.

Scientific Program:
Kristian Bredies
Dirk Lorenz
Lorenzo Rosasco

SciComm courses:
Divya Madhavan
Aurélie Thomann

Bibliography management tools:
Laurent Duval

Registration:
If you wish to join the school, please send an e-mail to modiana.pasquinelli@unige.it  *by July 1st 2021* with the following information:
 • subject: ITN TraDE-OPT summer school
 • your name and affiliation
 • whether you are part of the TraDE-OPT project (edited)

PhD students/ESR of the ITN should also apply as indicated above, the PIs need not to apply.

Call for PhD positions open

posted 18.01.2021 11:00

TWO PhD positions still open, submit your application to malga@unige.it or directly to the addresses below:

ESR7. Non-stationary preconditioning and multiscale approaches for
variational imaging
Host Institution U-GRAZ
Applications should be submitted to Prof. Kristian Bredies
kristian.bredies[at]uni-graz.at in English, as a single PDF.

ESR14. Automated method selection and tuning for optimization problems
in data science
Host Institution UCL
Applications should be submitted to Prof. François Glineur
Francois.Glineur[at]uclouvain.be in English, as a single PDF.

Applications should include:
     1. Motivation Letter (describing research career goals, skills,
experience, and highlighting the consistency between the candidate’s
profile and the chosen ESR position)
     2. A complete Curriculum Vitae with references to past research
and training experiences
     3. Copies of Bachelor and Master’s certificates/diploma & transcripts
     4. Two Reference Letters
     5. Publications (if available).

NOTE: In your Motivation Letter indicate if you applied for both PhD
positions in our network. In this way we can ensure a more efficient
handling of your application. TraDE-OPT recruitment and employment
strategy is based on an equal opportunities policy and in full
compliance with the principle of the Code of Conduct for the
Recruitment of Researchers. We value diversity, and do not
discriminate based on gender, religion, marital status, age, or
cultural background. TraDE-OPT seeks to increase the number of women
in those scientific areas where they are under-represented and
therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.
